Your Annual Home Maintenance Checklist

Your Annual Home Maintenance Checklist

According to statistics, home maintenance costs are climbing by 9.3% in the US this year.

Every homeowner knows that they need to do some household maintenance on their home, but it’s hard to remember everything that needs to be done.

Not only is it hard to remember what needs to be done, but if you don’t do it at the right time or in the right order, you could cause even more damage.

But don’t worry. Keep reading for our home maintenance yearly checklist and never forget a thing again. This checklist will help you stay on top of your game and keep your home in great condition all year long.

Clean Gutters and Downspouts

Your gutters and downspouts control the flow of rainwater on your roof and away from your home. If they’re clogged, water can back up and cause damage to your roof and siding.

Clean them out at least once a year to ensure they’re functioning properly. And always check for any damage because some damage, like a bent section of the gutter, can easily go unnoticed until it’s too late.

If you are cleaning your gutters yourself, be careful! Use a ladder and be sure to have someone help you hold the ladder in place while cleaning your home exterior.

Inspect Your Roof

Your roof is one of the most important parts of your home, so it’s important to inspect it regularly for damage. Damage can include missing or broken shingles, cracked tiles, and water damage.

Check Your Windows and Doors

Your windows and doors are another key part of your home’s exterior. Check them regularly for any cracks, damage, or gaps. These can all let in water and pests.

Repair any damage as soon as possible to prevent further damage and increase your home’s security.

Trim Trees and Shrubs

Overgrown trees and shrubs can do a lot of damage to your home. They can damage your roof, clog your gutters, and provide a place for pests to live.

Regular seasonal maintenance will keep them from causing damage, increase your home value and add curb appeal.

Check Your Home’s Foundation

Your home’s foundation is vital to its stability. Check it regularly for cracks or other damage. These can let water in and cause serious damage to your home.

Test Your Smoke Detectors and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are vital for your safety. Test them regularly to make sure they’re working properly.

If you find that they’re not working, replace them as soon as possible.

Replace Furnace Filter(s)

A dirty furnace filter will reduce the efficiency of your heating system, costing you more money in the long run. Replace the filter every 6 months to keep your system running at its best.

Inspect and Clean Dryer Vents

A blocked dryer vent can cause your dryer to overheat, which is a fire hazard. Clean it out at least once a year to prevent any problems.

Check Insulation Levels

If your home isn’t properly insulated, you could be losing heat in the winter and cooling in the summer. Check your insulation levels to see if you need more insulation.

Follow This Home Maintenance Yearly Checklist

While some of these items on your home maintenance yearly checklist may seem like a pain, it’s important to remember that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. By completing these tasks on an annual basis, you can help ensure that your home stays in good condition and lasts for years to come.
