Beyond House is a stunning contemporary villa situated in the prestigious Clifton neighborhood of Cape Town, South Africa. Designed by SAOTA, the house is perched on the slopes of Lion’s Head and offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Twelve Apostles Mountain range. The design seamlessly integrates the natural landscape with modern living, offering residents the ultimate in comfort and luxury and is a testament to the harmonious coexistence of modern living and elemental architecture. The house’s design takes full advantage of its dramatic setting, offering panoramic views of the ocean and mountains while providing the ultimate in comfort and luxury.
The villa is organized vertically, with the lower levels accommodating six generously sized bedrooms, a spa, cinema, and games room. The uppermost level is home to the main living area, which includes an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living space. The design blurs the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living, with floor-to-ceiling glass doors opening onto a back garden that leads directly to Table Mountain National Park. The house features a pool that extends out towards the ocean, providing an incredible space for relaxation and entertaining.
The entrance to Beyond House is a carefully composed composition of four lower stories that offer tantalizing glimpses of the two levels towering above. The entrance facade is inspired by Le Corbusier’s definition of architecture as a “magnificent play of masses brought together in light.” The house’s design uses intersecting planes, ceilings, and floor treatments to create a robust, seamless form that defines the various functions of the space. The concept is carried through to the material scale, with rough concrete over the main lounge and a timber ceiling made from the same boards that shuttered the concrete above.
Beyond House is not only a luxurious living space but also a setting for a prized collection of contemporary South African art. The art is carefully curated to work with the architecture, blurring the lines between home and gallery. The entrance hall features a tapestry by Paul Blomkamp and a sculpture by Paul Edmunds, while the double volume entertainment area features an inhabitable sculpture by Porky Hefer. The African masks worked into the dark walls over the kitchen add an extra layer of cultural significance to the space with interiors purposely curated by ARRCC together with OKHA.
