Sunnuflöt 44 is located in Garðabær, a suburb of Reykjavík, Iceland. The original mid-20th century family home has undergone a transformative renovation and expansion, elevating its original modernist spirit while adapting to the needs of contemporary living. Originally constructed in 1966, the house began as a simple flat-roofed structure before undergoing various alterations, including the addition of a pitched roof and Steni façade panels. These layers, while practical, had obscured the essence of its modernist roots. The recent renovation sought to peel back these modifications, restoring the home’s minimalist integrity while introducing significant enhancements that align with today’s lifestyle.

Central to the redesign was the creation of a more open and cohesive living space. The removal of the pitched roof and outdated façade panels allowed for a reimagining of the building’s layout. A new family room now anchors the heart of the home, and an expansive extension on the south side introduces a kitchen and dining area bathed in natural light, thanks to a broad glass window that seamlessly connects the interior to a cantilevered patio. A thoughtfully placed glazed slit between the dining and living rooms, which occupy separate levels, further invites daylight into the home and enhances the connection between indoor and outdoor environments.

The garden area complements the architectural updates with the addition of a concrete spa building, complete with a sauna and outdoor geothermal hot tub, blending wellness with the natural Icelandic landscape. Interior enhancements include a wide stairway leading from the entrance hall to the living room, which now flows effortlessly onto the lower patio, creating a dynamic yet harmonious living experience. This project exemplifies how a mid-century residence can be meticulously modernized to both honor its historical design and embrace the demands of modern living.
