The Planar House, designed by Studio MK27 and led by architects Marcio Kogan and Lair Reis, is a minimalist rural residence that serves as a weekend home for a family of five and their guests. Completed in 2018 in Porto Feliz, Brazil, the project is a striking example of horizontality, a recurring theme in the studio’s work. Discreetly positioned at the highest point of its plot, the house blends seamlessly with the natural topography. The extensive horizontal layout is highlighted by a rigid concrete slab supported directly by cross-shaped metallic pillars, without visible beams. The green roof, considered the fifth facade, features vegetation, solar panels, and skylights, contributing to both the aesthetic and thermal comfort of the building.

The architectural design of the Planar House divides it into two main volumes: one containing service areas, a gym, and playrooms, and the other housing five en-suite bedrooms. The living rooms at the extremities can be fully opened or closed with sliding glass doors, transforming the entire house into a terrace. The interiors are characterized by low, solid wood furniture, allowing for free circulation and an individualized reading of each piece. A translucent multi-colored club-chair hanging from the slab adds a focal point that contrasts with the house’s horizontality.

Surrounding the rigid formal distribution is a vertically winding brick wall, crafted from solid bricks arranged in solids and voids. This wall, at times concave and at others convex, creates dynamic light filters and defines the relationship between internal and external spaces. It embraces the entrance garden, creating transparencies and offering protection from the street while contributing to a cozy atmosphere. The material palette, limited to wood and concrete, enhances the minimalist aesthetic of the residence, making the Planar House a standout project in contemporary architectural design.
